Hello everyone,
As promised, I’ve put together a brief introduction post on the new section I’m starting.
Recently I took a week off, and during that time I wrote a lot of poems. Most of them were short, not more than five or six lines — quick experiments, to see what I could do with a rhyme, or an image, or a scene. And I loved it. I thought, what if I did this every week?
So I’ve decided to start a new section, to try this out. I’m calling it the Journal, and my plan is to post very short poems there, hopefully once a week (it may not be the same day each week). For the sake of coherence, and as an exercise in consistency, I’ll be writing them as a response to the Wolf Hall novels, and keep to that theme until the end of the year.
I’m really excited about this! It’ll give me a place to experiment within a very few self-imposed limits, as well as the freedom to post work that may not be my most polished in the interest of learning more about my craft. I’m also looking forward to engaging with the books and working out my thoughts through poetry, which is something I’ve never done before.
If you’re interested, you can sign up to receive emails from this section (through the manage subscription button in the menu under your profile icon). You won’t be automatically signed up to it, so if you would like to receive the posts you’ll have to opt in to them.
Finally, I would like to extend a thank you and a welcome to new subscribers. There are thirty of you now, where a month ago there were fifteen — I’m still not completely over the shock, though enough to say I’m very pleased you’re here! There are lots of new poems in the queue for the next few months, as well as a couple of essays, stories, and, hopefully, a short serial. I look forward to sharing them all with you!
As always, thanks for reading,
Iris Shaw
