In grad school in the late 70s I had an amazing Contemporary British Fiction course where we read Iris Murdoch, Muriel Spark, Antony Powell, Alan Sillitoe, Susan Hill, Doris Lessin, and more--and the professor got the books in London because many of them just weren't available here. It was thrilling.
It was a heavy reading load but every book was wonderful and opened me up to contemporary Brits I would probably not have found on my own. I especially like reading Susan Hill's Strange Meeting and The Bird of Night the same week.
